Do I need to use the app? No. The remote handles colour, brightness and music sync on its own, so it works fine without a phone.
Does it need bulbs? No. The LEDs are built in, so it works out of the box.

Can it do plain white? Yes. It is not RGB only. Dimmed low it works as normal ambient lighting rather than a colour effect.
