Size is the decision that matters, so start there. A 60 by 30cm pad covers a mouse and very little else. Go up to 90 by 40cm or 100 by 50cm and the whole front of the desk is covered, which is the one to pick if you are protecting the surface underneath or building a setup where everything matches.
Then the surface. Cotton and linen over rubber is the softest under your wrist and the cheapest way to cover a big desk. Felt is warmer and quieter to type on. PU leather wipes clean in one pass, which makes it the sensible choice if you eat at your desk. What size should I get?
Measure the space you actually have first, then work back. 60 by 30cm is a mouse pad. 80 by 30cm holds a keyboard and mouse together. 90 by 40cm and up covers most of a standard desk, and 100 by 50cm or 120 by 50cm is the full width look you see in setup photos.
It arrives rolled up. Does it flatten out?
Yes. Lay it flat with the curl facing down and leave it overnight, or put a couple of books on the corners for an hour. Rubber has a memory and it lets go on its own.
Can I wash it?
Hand wash the fabric ones with a little soap and cold water, then dry them flat. Keep them out of the washing machine and the tumble dryer, because heat is what separates the fabric from the rubber. If you would rather not think about it at all, pick a PU leather mat and wipe it with a damp cloth instead.
What goes with a desk mat?
A monitor stand lifts the screen off the mat and gives you the space back underneath, and a pen holder keeps the pens off the surface you just covered. For a matching glow along the back of the desk, look at LED strips.
