Why 4mm changes how a mouse pad feels

Most mats are 2mm, which is really just a surface. At 4mm there is enough give that the edge of the desk stops digging into your forearm, and a mechanical keyboard sounds noticeably softer because the case is not sitting on a hard board. It also hides a slightly uneven desk. The trade off is that the keyboard sits 4mm higher, which is nothing unless you type with the feet up and already find it steep.

Common Questions

Does the texture slow the mouse down? A little, compared to a thin printed mat. It is a controlled surface rather than a fast one, which most people prefer for work and plenty prefer for gaming too.

Is cotton and linen hard to keep clean? It is water repellent, so a splash beads rather than soaks. For anything worse it hand washes in cold water and dries flat. If a wipe clean surface matters more, the PU leather mat is the one.

Which size covers a full desk? 100 by 50cm. 90 by 45cm is the sensible large option, and 60 by 30cm is a mouse pad rather than a desk mat.

Do the colours look flat or textured? Textured. You can see the weave close up, which is most of the appeal and why these suit a wooden desk.
