A sweeping quartz movement moves the second hand continuously instead of stepping it, which is what makes it silent. Hands also beat a bright digital display next to your head, because you can read them by the glow rather than staring at a lit screen at four in the morning. Does it come with a battery? There is not one in the box, so it is worth having one ready for when it lands.

How long do the hands glow for? They charge from the light in the room and fade over the night rather than glowing until morning. That is how all luminous paint behaves, and it is why the backlight button is there.

Is it genuinely silent? The movement sweeps rather than ticks. Put your ear right against it and you will hear a faint hum, which is the motor, and at arm length it is silent.

Is the alarm loud enough to wake me? It is a standard bedside alarm rather than a phone siren. If you sleep through everything, keep the phone as a backup.
