A hand painted table lamp with the artwork on the fabric shade rather than the base, so the picture is backlit and only really arrives once the lamp is on. It stands 27cm tall, takes a standard E27 bulb, and there are eight shades to choose from.

The eight shades, and what is actually on them

Birds on Bamboo, Amber is two birds on a bamboo branch over a warm ochre ground, the warmest of the set. Lotus and Dragonfly, Blue has big blue grey lotus leaves with a dragonfly and a flash of pink. Ink Lotus, Pale Blue is the faintest, ink lotus and reeds on almost white. Mountain Landscape, Gold puts blue and green mountains on a gold ground. Red Blossom and Village has red plum blossom above white walled houses and a small boat. Pink Blossom on Blue runs pink blossom branches across a soft blue sky. Yellow Blossom, Cream is the most sparse, one golden branch on cream. And Plain Cream, No Pattern is exactly that, for anyone who wants the warm glow without a picture on it.

Why the shade is the whole product

Most bedside lamps are plain on purpose. This one is not, and that is the appeal. Because the painting sits on the shade and the bulb sits behind it, the lamp is two different objects depending on the switch: off, it is a quiet cream box on a wooden plinth, and on, the picture comes through lit from within. The fabric keeps the light soft, so the painting stays the thing you notice rather than the bulb.

Is the painting on the base or the shade? The shade. The wooden base is plain, and it is there to weigh the lamp down and to lift the shade to eye level on a bedside table.

Which version should I get? The standard version is a simple lamp. The remote version adds wireless dimming, handy if you like to turn it down from bed.

Does it come with a bulb? No, it takes any standard E27 bulb, which means you choose the glow. A warm white bulb around 2700K brings out the vintage look best, and it is the one that suits every shade in the range.

Will my shade look exactly like the photograph? Close, but not identical. These are painted by hand, so small differences from lamp to lamp are part of the deal rather than a fault.
